Nonfiction!

"The Fall of the Hindenburg" is a nonfiction piece that we will be reading this week. Nonfiction (NOT FAKE!) deals with only real people, events or ideas and is narrated from the point of view, or perspective, of the author, who is a real person. It may reflect the historical context of the time period, including references to major social and cultural information. However, not all nonfiction accounts or stories are in written form. Some are recounted in discussions or on news programs.

Talk to any adult in your life (grandparent, mother, father, aunt, uncle, guardian, teacher, cousin... etc) and  ask them about a major historical event they can recall in their life. Maybe they will give you insight into 9/11 or the JFK assassination.... or the first trip to the moon....or the Cuban Missile Crisis... or stories about the Vietnam War or Martin Luther King!  Ask them about the historical context of the time period in which their event takes place. What was going on in the world or the United States at the time?

After your chat with the adult in your life, summarize the conversation and what you learned from their nonfiction account!

Your summary must at least be 8 sentences long. Read it over with the adult whom you had the discussion with in order to check your work for spelling, grammar, punctuation, run-on sentences etc.

If you'd like, you can research more about the event and include a link to an informative website on your post!

Your post is due no later than Friday at 5pm.

  1. The person that I chose to write this blog about was my dad, and he decided to talk about the J. F. K. assassination. He was in the seventh grade, it was a Friday afternoon at 1:30 pm. He was in gym class on the soccer field at Rockport High School. An upperclassmen came out of the school and announced to everyone that president Kennedy had been shot and wounded in the stomach. Class was suspended; once inside the school, his principle announced that the president was gravely wounded and that school was being dismissed. He got off the bus and stopped at his friends' grandfathers convenient store where he heard the radio announcement that our president was dead. His friends' grandmother began sobbing uncontrollably. My dad and his friends were stunned at the news; they didn’t know how to react. The whole world seemed to know at the same time what had happened. Life as they knew it came to a halt and would never be quite the same.

  2. I asked my mom about the storm of February, 1978. She was only six at the time. The storm collapsed sea walls and destroyed beach houses. A lot of people were stranded in thier houses without power. The snow was 28 inches with hurricane winds. Dozens of lobster boats were lost at sea. The waves were 30 to 40 feet tall. Worst of all people couldn't come to my moms birthday party.

  3. I asked my mom about 9/11. She said she remembered that day very clearly. I was one and a half and i was sitting in my highchair with my pajamas on. My mom was feeding me when all of a sudden my dad called. He said “put on the news now!” My mom quickly put on the TV not knowing what was happening. Before her eyes was the World Trade Center, burning. Then she saw a plane hit the second tower. That was when she knew it wasn’t an accident. My mom was scared. She didn’t know what was going to happen next. My mom will never forget that tragic day.

I decided to ask my grandmother about the cuban missle crisis. She said that she was a teacher at the time and that she had three daughters. One of them being my mom!So any ways all three of her children were in different buildings that day.So when they had lunch breaks in that year she said that you went home to get your lunch. No school lunch! Then since all of her children were in different buildings she ran home.At that time her house was the cape ann light house! But they shut it down that day so my grandfather was there watching my mom when she was a baby.My grandmother had to go find her two other daughters at school and they were in different buildings! So she brought them home and they had to wait a couple of minuets to open the gate. But in the end the missles were not fired at us.

  6. I talked to Ms.Domohowski about 9/11, she was only 12 at that time.sho told me that she didn’t really know what happened. She was in woodshop when it happened, and she thought that the teachers were talking about two wooden planes that crashed in to two twin’s wooded towers. Then she went to gym class, and she saw what happened. One of her friends said that her dad was on a plane to go California, so her friend didn’t know if her dad was ok, so she got dismissed. When she got home, she sat with her parents and saw the whole thing happen and she was VERY sad. Everyone in America came together and put flags up and they were proud to be Americans.

I think that it was cool that people could handle them self so much to come together a be sad toget her after such a huge problem. I mean if it was me who had someone die that ment alot to me because of this I would of not been able to come together and raise flags like that.

  7. My mom told me about Hurricane Katrina and she said she couldn't take her eyes off the TV. She was horrified that the government didn't do anything for days. Meanwhile tens of thousands of people were dieing and suffering. The government sent nearly no resources to help them and the newscasters were saying "who is going to help these people!". They were showing pictures of the disaster and just dead bodies floating in rivers that were streets just days before. They had crammed as much people as possible into the Superome. The few lucky people who made it inside had no food, water, running toilets,or space. Even some people died inside of the stadium from various different causes. The government sent 0 help. She thought the government was a disgrace and she was not proud to be part of our country then because most of the victims were black and poor and she thinks if they were rather white and have a good income.

  9. I talked to my dad about 9/11. A few weeks ago I went to the 9/11 memorial in New York City where the Twin Towers once stood. My dad said that his friends wife had a brother that died in the terrorist attack. My mom and dad were watching it on the television with me and my older sister Hannah. I was too young to know what happened that day but every September Hannah and I watch it. I respect everyone who died in 9/11.

  10. My great grandfather Joe I found very amazing to look up to. I think this because he was in the world war 2. He got shot right above the heart and almost died. He had a lot of wounds but they brought him instantly to the hospital. He stayed in the hospital for about three weeks. When he finally was able to come home he was a bit depressed that he couldn’t go back to save anyone else with him that had died. He was very glad he could stay my family. Eventually that is when my grandmother died. He was way too upset to do anything. Then about a month later he got sick because of his heart problems and died in the nursing home. My great grandfather was an amazing ,exiting person to hear about !
