First Memory

We have been studying poetry on and off for quite some time now. Much of poetry deals with self reflection and self expression. I want you to dig deep into your memory bank and try to recall your earliest memory. Describe what occurred. Discuss (about) how old you were and what was going on at the time. Incorporate sensory language to clue your readers in on what you were feeling, seeing, tasting, touching and hearing at the time.

Your post must be NO LESS than 10 sentences this week! If you choose, you may write it as a poem (no less than 10 lines). It is due Friday 4/12 by 5pm

  1. My earliest memory was of me in the Dominican Republic. I was 5 years old. I was with my friends. The oldest boy was 10. I always wanted to follow their lead and try to be cool. Sometimes it made be do bad things that I now regret. One thing I remember is that we were walking on the street in the neighborhood at night and one of my cousins threw a rock at a house. It sounded really loud and it scared me because he did it without us knowing that he was going to do it. We ran to hide behind another house. The group of boys wanted me to do it. They didn't want to get in trouble. They probably thought I wouldn't get in trouble because I was only five. I DID throw it and then we ran and the people who owned the house saw us running. We hid behind the bush. The oldest boy hid with me in the bush. My cousin dove over a low fence that was blocking the back yard, and then stayed down out of view. The people who owned the house shined a flashlight on us into the bush and they yelled. They never noticed where we were so they left and we all went home. Nobody got in trouble. This is one example of a memory I have when I was young.

  2. My earliest memory of when I was a child was my first haircut. I was about 3 years old and I still remember my sister carrying me into the barber shop on top of her shoulders. We’re much older now but we both remember it clearly. I was very nervous sitting the large, black leather chair; but when the barber came in he was extremely kind and great with little kids. He told me to turn my head in specific directions in order to get the right angle on my hair. I felt the cold metal of the scissors against the back of my head. I could see my reflection in the mirrors on the wall. Before I knew it, almost all of my hair was cut off. I felt shiny and new and I was so happy that I went for a haircut. When he was finished, my mom payed him and he handed me an enormous blue lollipop and said, “Just for you.” Then, my sister put me back on top of her shoulders and we rode all the way home, waiting to show the rest of my family my brand new haircut.

  4. My earliest memory was my first New England Patriots game. I remember it like it was yesterday. I was five years old. It was me and my uncle Teddy. We saw the Patriots v.s. the Miami Dolphins, the Patriots' rivals. Right when we got up to the gates to the arena, I was so excited for it. When the game started, I was speechless. To see all of the screaming fans and to see the players live was an amazing experience for me. The food was really delicious and I can even remember what I ate. I had a hot dog and a cheeseburger and for a drink I had a Coca Cola. The Patriots won the game 31-14!!! This moment is also one of my favorite moments ever!

  5. My earliest memory is the time I was playing with my grandmother's phone. That very day I asked my grandmother if I could play with here phone remember I was about 4 when I asked to do this. My grandmother said yes so I started randomly dialing different numbers and I still do not known if this was a coincidence or but I dialed 911! So in about 5 minutes the cops, medics, and the firefighters were all piled up on my grandmother's tiny street and trying to see what was wrong. So eventually the police and everyone else knocked on the door that they got the call from and asked my grandmother.Did you call 911? My grandmother was freaking out that the police and everyone else was there so she remembered that she let me play with the phone so she said I know who did it now! So she eventually found me bunched up in the corner and brought me over and told them it was a false alarm. But after they found out it was me they told me that 911 is for emergencies only and is not to be called unless an emergency so all and all I learned an important lesson that day one that 911 is for emergencies only and two never play with a real telephone again!

  6. My earliest memory was learning something I love to do. I was around the age of 2 years old. At this time my dad was teaching me how to ski. The icy breeze was nipping at my nose as I shakily slid down the bunny hill. My dad was overjoyed that I was steadily moving down the trail, but I was too young to realize what was happening. I could hear the creeking and grinding of the chairlifts above me, and saw the snow slide off people’s skis from above. Slushy snow hit the top of my helmet and made its’ way down my warm back. My dad thought it was funny until he heard me crying, like many times before and other times in the future he came to my rescue. He swiped the snow from my back and told me that he was proud of me. We continued down the trail and went into the lodge. The rest is history.

  7. I could feel the butterflies flying around my stomach, I could hear many kids playing. I was so nervous on my first memory. The first day of Kindergarten. This memory is the only one that I can descriptively remember. I remember being in the school cafeteria with my Mom and Dad. I had a yellow flower dress on and a bow in my hair. My teacher led us into a straight line and down to our class. I didn’t know anybody but, I made a good friend my first day there. Since, we were only in kindergarten I’m pretty sure our first day was only a half a day. We each got our own soil and pot with a seed in it. We got to water it and write our name on it. After school was over I can remember my mom picking me up. She was waiting inside and I ran up and hugged her. I was so happy to get out of school, although it was really fun!

  8. My earliest memory was when I was like two years old. I had just moved to North Carolina and my mom went to go change my diaper. When she took my diaper off and I crawled away and peed on the rug. I had done the same thing to my babysitter Kelly. She had never had a kid before so she was new at changing diapers and I peed on her lap.

  9. My earliest memory was when I was was 5 or six and I had just gotten picked up from school. When I got in the car my mom told me that my aunt who had been living with us left me and my sister a present. Instantly I started to think of what she could have given me, I was hoping for a new toy truck or a new bike or maybe a dart gun. Once my mom pulled into the driveway I jumped out of the car and ran inside, when I got up to my room I began looking around for a wrapped box. When I couldn't find it I thought it must have been a game of hide and seek with a present, after searching most of the house I looked in the last possible place in the house. There is a closet in my house where we keep our shoes so I opened it up and I saw my aunt’s dog Pablo, at first I was confused and I thought she forgot him so I picked him up and ran to my mom. She said that he was the present but I was still confused and i asked why she didn't take him and my mom explained to me how me and my sister were spending more time with him then she was so she gave him to us. Then I began playing with my new dog.

  10. My earliest memory was the first day of dance class,I was 2 years old. It was ballet class, at first I was nervous what if I couldn't do ballet and I would be a laughing stoke. But that's when the dance teacher came in and introduced herself, her name was Dawn. She told us to get in a straight line next to each other, because she was going to teach us the ballet positions. First she said, first position and it was easy but when she got to 4th position it was tricky. So she told me to go home and practice 4th position. Next we did turns, they were tricky because I got confused which hand goes with what foot. I got frusteraded because i still couldnt do it, but then Dawn came over and helped me, and I eneded up getting it. So the first day of dance class was fun!
