The Road Not Taken

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

In 8 or more sentences, describe why you think the poem is titled, "The Road Not Taken."
Explain what road you would have taken if you were the speaker.

  1. In life, there are two roads: One good one and one bad one. You have to choose which road to take quickly. Once you choose which one you want to take, there is no turning back, "Yet knowing how way leads on to way / I doubted if I should ever come back." The road that is not taken will shall and always will be, a mystery. I agree with the speaker's choice to take the road less traveled by because people want to be like others and choose the same road. But, stay true to yourself and pick the one that seems right to you.

  2. In this poem “The Road Not Taken” there are two roads. There is one road that everyone has not taken and its all “grassy and wanted wear” as it says in the poem. Then, there’s another road that’s the same but looks like many people have taken that one. If I were to take a road, I would pick the one that’s less traveled by because I could be the first one to go on that road.

  3. There are two roads in a wood, would you take the one less traveled by? I would just like the speaker in the poem "the road not taken" by Robert Frost. I believe that the author named this poem the road not taken because there are two roads and there is one that is all ruffed up and one that looks like it has not even been touched. So just out of curiosity I would have taken the one that looked as though it had not been traveled by. I also think this poem is called the road not taken because the other road looks like it has not been taken by anyone.

  4. I think the poem is titled “The Road Not Taken” because Robert Frost is talking about how he took the road that was less traveled. He did not take the road that many people traveled, hence the road not taken. For example, in the poem Robert Frost writes “I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference”. I believe Robert is saying he made the right choice in taking the road less traveled. He gives a sigh of relief at the end of the poem. He is relieved that everything worked out in the end. The road not taken is the one he didn’t travel on. He says he picked the right road and it has made his life so much better. It makes me think about my everyday choices in life. “The Road Not Taken” really gets me wondering.

  5. We have recently read a poem in class called “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost. In the title “The Road Not Taken” I think what Frost is speaking about the more difficult road, the one that is less traveled. This poem has a sentimental meaning that most people have a difficult time contemplating. In the poem, the narrator is trying to make a decision on which path to take, the worn path, or the path not taken. I think the poem has a much deeper meaning than what is on the outside. I believe that the two paths represent the road to heaven and the road to hell. You could take the easy road through life or the difficult one, which would have greater reward in the end. If I happened to be the narrator, I would take the road less traveled by in order to live happily when my life on this earth is over. So the real question you have to ask yourself is, if you found to roads diverged in a yellow wood, one that is worn and one that is tattered, which road would would you take? I believe that if you took the road less traveled by; that would make all the difference.

  6. In the poem, The Road Not Taken, by Robert Frost, he talks about two roads in the woods. He is trying to decide which road to take. He is thinking about what would happen if he takes the road that not walked on. He decides to go on the one that no one has walked on because he wants to see if there are new things to discover. I would pick the road not taken because I could be the first one to go on the path and see new things. I might have to make a decision like this when I am in High School. I want to go to college but I don't if that will happen or if that would be the best choice for me. I will decide when it is time.
